Pranab Mukherjiee is India's 13th President

Former Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjiee is India's 13th President. Pranab Mukherjee, UPA's candidate, was today elected as the President of India, considerably defeating his own opponent, P.A. Sangma, the candidate of BJP.

Mr Mukherjee, 76-year-old Congress leader, is considered one of the most experienced and capable politicians in the country. He brings to the top Constitutional post a wealth of experience as he has held key positions in the party and government. His political career began in 1969 under the government of Indira Gandhi, for whom he was Minister of Finance. During Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's first term, he has served as defense minister (2004-2006) and for Foreign Affairs (2006-2009).

President-elect Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday thanked the people for his election to India's highest office and said it would be his responsibility to defend and protect the Constitution. 
"I have deep gratitude and appreciation for the people of this great country for conferring this distinction of electing me to the high office," Mukherjee told reporters here. 
"It would now be my responsibility to defend and protect the Constitution as President ... I would try to justify in modest way to be trustworthy of my people," he said.
