Padma, lotus flower

"Be like the lotus - say the sages of India - which has its roots in the mud, but whose flower emerges above the pond water and it is not contaminated."
Vishnu on lotus flower
The lotus, padma in Sanskrit, is a very important flower in India.
From Vishnu's navel grew a lotus on which was seated Brahma who created the universe. That is one of the names of Vishnu Padmanabha, i.e. with the navel lotus.
Also according to another tradition, the universe was born from a golden lotus, it tells the Padmapurana, the Purana lotus.
On padmapitha, i.e. on the lotus pedestal, the gods are always resting in their representations.
In the sacred buildings, the capitals of the columns are in the shape of lotus and lotus petals are the ones which surround the mandala and yantra.
The god Krishna is Padmapada, the god of the lotus feet, but above all Padma is one of the names of Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and luck, wife of Vishnu.
It's called padma asana, which is the lotus position, one of the main positions of yoga, one sitting with legs crossed and back straight. It’s the position best suited for meditation and one of the most popular positions of the Kamasutra.
Padma is called the wide delta of the sacred river Ganges, in fact the river flows into the sea, extending its branches like the petals of a lotus flower.
And finally, the Padma Shri is the fourth highest honor of the Indian Republic.

A treasure was born from Vishnu's navel

Lying Vishnu, lotus and Brahma
Bags full of jewels and precious stones, gold coins of the Napoleonic period, rings, necklaces, bracelets with diamonds, rubies and emeralds, gold necklaces meters long, crown, inlaid with precious stones sticks, plates and cups of gold.
For a first estimate of the treasure found in India is worth about 500 billion rupees ($ 11.2 billion) and it should be the greatest treasure ever found in the country and one of the richest ever found in the world.
We are in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), capital of Kerala, wonderful state in  south India and under the floor of the temple dedicated to Sree Padmanabhaswamy has been found what is presumably a maharaja's treasure, hidden there before independence from the British crown .
But there’s more, the exploration of the underground excavations of the temple is still in its beginning and it is possible that further discoveries are made. There are two of the six vaults were opened in the subsoil for the moment.
Only after a legal battle and court ruling of the local authorities had been able to start the research as the descendants of the Maharaja of Trevancore still ran the temple through a foundation, and they strenuously opposed the initiative and announced that they have appealed against the sentence .
The temple, also known as Ananda Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple (from here the name of city) is dedicated to the god Vishnu on the serpent Ananda in its infinite quiet, Anananthasayanam position, after the end of time he has absorbed all that exists. From dreaming Vishnu's navel borns a lotus on which Brahma is located who, according to one of the many Hindu cosmogonies, realizes the world that Vishnu dreams.
From here the name of the temple, in fact in Sanskrit padma means lotus and nabha navel.

The news:

Little Shiva

This picture of the little Shiva is very reassuring, it is in a temple of Shiva in my beloved Cochin in Kerala, wonderful State of south India.
He’s a baby Shiva, but he has all attributes of great god which I’ve described in another post.
The little boy is sleeping serenely on a leopard leather, in his right hand he is grasping trishula of the top of that there is the little dram damaru from which primordial syllable AUM was born and it is made by union of two triangles, female and male aspects, Shakti and Purusha, yoni and lingam. In left hand of little Shiva the is a little cobra.
There are a crescent of moon on his head, another small cobra and Ganga water springing from his hair. In the middle of his forehead there is the third eye and he has a japamala (rosary or prayer beads) around his neck.
I like the context of this picture too. In the background Himalaya rises majestically, that is the abode of Shiva. There is the vahana, the vehicle of Shiva:  the white bull, Nandi.
On lift side there is the mystic symbol of Shiva, the lingam-yoni, the union between male and female principles living  inside the God and from which the universe was born. On the top of lingam, there is padma, the lotus.

Shiva bambino
